Writer First. The writer is the fountainhead of the published product. Without words from the writer, there is no book to publish. Ridley House Books sails side-by-side with the writer, and as a team, we step through the process from start to finish. If the writer is not satisfied, we aren’t done, and we will work to get over the finish line.
Reader First. Every decision the writer makes about a word, a sentence, or a chapter must always consider the reader’s perspective as the first principle. Will the reader grasp the message? Are the words sensible? Are the words in the right order? Do the words convey the passion and emotion, not just the thought? Is the reader compelled to read more? Will the reader like what they’re reading?
Integrity and Respect. This goes both ways. How we treat others and how we would like to be treated by others is integral to our publishing work. We listen — it’s not just hearing with the ears, but actually listening with our heart and mind, that makes communication possible. We give our customers permission to throw a flag and stop the play until all parties are ready to continue. We communicate — we don’t just tell you we communicate — we actually do it. Customer service is not a slogan or catch-phrase — it’s part of our company culture. We strongly prefer talking directly whenever possible. Email is useful, but is not our main thing. We care — when a problem arises or a delay occurs (and they will), we tell the customer. We strive to be the first ones to alert about any issue that comes up, so our customers don’t hear about it through the grapevine. We answer — and when we don’t have the answer, we will find someone who does.
Craftsmanship. Books are more than information, and are often works of art. Books reveal compassion and tell stories. Books represent the culmination of talent from the writer, editor, and all the people behind the scenes making the publishing “furniture” come together. From the first word to the last, from the cover page to the index, every component must be of the best quality we can produce.
Intentional. Each book we publish must adhere to our mission statement and each book we publish must be a manuscript we can be proud of. Our purpose is to create works of word art which please the reader.
